Contents Page Research

This contents page is from smash hits. Interestingly the Top of the Pops magazine I looked at didn't have a contents page and looking at the Smash Hit's contents page, it is clear that they haven't included every single page.

I think this is down to the genre of magazine, my audience may be the type that opens a magazine at page one, and reads page to page until the end. This style also contains a lot of juvenile 'fillers' like quizzes, embarrassing moments and advertisements which aren't essentially needed on the contents page.

Looking at this cover from a few years ago, I can definitely see how trends have changed in magazines styles as this page doesn't look very modern. The quality of Rachel Stevens's big picture isn't very good and the cutting out isn't perfect and her boots appear to have been drawn on. This may been down to impending deadlines.

I like the letter from the editor which is standard in many music magazines and also the polaroid style pictures even if they are a tad cliché. However the colour scheme is quite sickly.

In my own magazine I will definately not worry to much about including every single page in the contents and I may also use a central column like Smash Hit's. I also have an idea of presenting main pictures like this:

  1. The photo 'grid' is a good compositional device to use, post some draft versions of the page here as it develops.
