Research Process...

Research Begins:

Kerrang
I have several ideas in regards to my music magazine. However before i decide exactly what genre I am going to do I first want to research different types of Music Magazines.

The first magazine i decided to anazlyze was the very popular heavy metal magazine Kerrang. When i first saw this cover I established straight away that this was no bubblegum pop magazine. I knew this just from the design of the mast head. The fact that the magazines title is all in capitals gives the impression of volume, also the fact the text is cracked again creates the impression of an aggresive amosphere. Also the models brooding expressions and the way the camera angle makes them look like they are almost coming out of the picture creates an intimidating image.

Q Magazine
The other magazine i decided to analyse was a complete contrast to Kerrang. Where Kerrang thrives on the brooding and bad behaviour of its rockers, Q magazine uses its stars sex appeal to its advantage. For example, unlike Kerrang Lily Allen is topless and looking over her shoulder towards the camera. This particular pose inspires ideas of innocence, however her eyes are incredibly provocative. The fact Q Has used Lily Allen as one of its models in itself shows Q to be a magaine based around a wide variety of genres. Unlike with Kerrangs title, Q uses a much simpilar approach. One letter that is Capitalised and has a red background. This simple title and use of dramatic colour is a very clever as it is eyecatching and simple to remember.

After analysing and looking in depth at two completely different types of magazine I have decided, due to my lack of knowledge and interest in the "Rock world," I would liked to use Q's approach and base my magazine on several types of genres. Now that I have decided what type of magazine I am going to use as my inspiration I am going to start looking for ideas of different types of artists I could feature in my magazine.

The first Band I looked at was the Veronicas as I personally love their music and I think they have just the right amount of attitude and Sex appeal in order to make a front cover eye catching. I chose to look at the veronicas because I am thinking of using a girl duet on my front cover and I think the veronicas are a great example of the kind of music and style the band I have in mind has.

I want my magazine to contain lot's of different artists, it is for this reason that I think including the Hati earthquake's release of Everybody Hurts in my contents is fantastic because it is underlining a very real cause and it in itself features many different artists such as; Bono, Cheryl Cole and many many more.

The final Musical influence i looked at was the very popular and ever so slightly cheesy musicals of the west end. I want my magazine to cover a range of interests and be unique in every way possible. Therefore I think mentioning new musicals and possibly have some pictures of such musicals would be very interesting and would appeal to a diverse audience. I dont just want my magazine to cover the latest music sensations, I want my magazine to cover all different types of music including that of the west end and broadway.

After looking at a range of different types of music, I have decided that I want to base my double spread page article on an interview with one of my best friends bands: Your Girlfriends Nightmare. This is mainly because I think it will be simple and interesting to write an in depth interview on a real band, rather than an imaginary one. My best friends band consists of two girls whose main influences are that of Avril Lavigne and the Veronicas. Both of the girls have their own style and it is that edginess and sexiness that I want to depict in my photoshoot with them. Therefore sthey dont want to be featured in my pictures, I have looked for two models that I believe will achieve this. For example one of my models is blonde and the other is brunette. I have decided to use such a contrast not only because Hayley and Laura are blonde and brunette but also because it creates a fantastic contrast visually. It is for the same reason that i have decided I want one of my models to radiate a sense of sweetness and innocence, with just a hint of attitude, while the other model screams sex appeal and attitude. Therefore I have chosen their wardrobe in accordance with this image. I want Jess to wear a very innocent girly colour, for example pink, whilst Emily is dressed all in black, again the two colours are dark verses light and will be incredibly eye catching.

In order to achieve the desired look I want I have decided to look for artists that have the precise image I am imagining for my front cover. After looking at several difference Female artists and magazine covers I came up with two different artists that show cased the particular style I wanted each of my models to have.

The first was a magazine cover of Chery Cole. The minute I saw this cover I knew this was exactly the kind of image I wanted my first model, Emily to have.I did seriously think about using rain in my photo, because for some reason men think that particular imagery is sexy, however after several attempts of trying to take a shot, which actually shows the rain drops I have decided it will be to hard to get such a shot. However I have decided that I am going to use dark eye makeup and red lipstick on Emily as I think it creates a very provocative effect.

I then began looking for ideas of what I wanted jess to look like. I had in my head ideas however I needed to find an aritist who put my ideas into reality. After spending a lesson searching I found a picture of Avril Lavigne that just like the Cheryl Cole picture represented everything I want to show in my pictures. Although I have to admit I think the hairstyle Avril has in this picture is abit to over the top. However the girly pink dress combined with the slightly punky converse shoes really makes this picture look both innocent and edgy at the same time, which is exactly the image I want my model Jess to create.

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out where my location for my photoshoot should take place. I wanted somewhere that was as glamarous and as edgy as my models. It is for that reason that I didnt think a simple white background would work. Luckily I am going to the beautiful city of New York in 3 weeks. Unfortunatly I'm unable to take my models with me, however photoshop has the tools which will enable me to drop in my New York pictures behind my models.
