Research Begins

I have several ideas in regards to my music magazine. However before i decide exactly what genre I am going to do I first want to research different types of Music Magazines.

The first magazine i decided to anazlyze was the very popular heavy metal magazine Kerrang. When i first saw this cover I established straight away that this was no bubblegum pop magazine. I knew this just from the design of the mast head. The fact that the magazines title is all in capitals gives the impression of volume, also the fact the text is cracked again creates the impression of an aggresive amosphere. Also the models brooding expressions and the way the camera angle makes them look like they are almost coming out of the picture creates an intimidating image.

The second magazine i decided to analyse was a complete contrast to Kerrang. Where Kerrang thrives on the brooding and bad behaviour of its rockers, Q magazine uses its stars sex appeal to its advantage. For example, unlike Kerrang Lily Allen is topless and looking over her shoulder towards the camera. This particular pose inspires ideas of innocence, however her eyes are incredibly provocative. The fact Q Has used Lily Allen as one of its models in itself shows Q to be a magaine based around a wide variety of genres. Unlike with Kerrangs title, Q uses a much simpilar approach. One letter that is Capitalised and has a red background. This simple title and use of dramatic colour is very clever as it is eyecatching and simple to remember.

Rolling Stone

The final Magazine I have decided to analyse is an american magazine called, Rolling Stone. What I love about this particular magazine is its ability to vary it's content. Rolling Stone isn't just about what the stars of the music industry are getting upto today, it also features artilces about Actors. It is this wide variety of content that most appeals to me because like Rolling Stone I don't my magazine to be limited to just talking about the latest music sensations. I want my magazine to have a depth and a culture to it, I want my magazine to cover lot's of different forms of music. For example a I believe there is a very large audience base for a magazine containing musical theatre content. For instance reviews and interviews with the stars of musicals such as; Legally Blonde, Wicked, Avenue Q and lot's lot's more. I think that including such a wide variety of content will make my magazine extremely popular and easy to market as it caters for many different interests. The layout of Rolling Stone's front cover is extremely different from the likes of Kerrang and Q. For example whist Q relies on extremely detailed and locational backgrounds, for example new york featured in Cheryl Coles photoshoot, Rolling Stone uses a very simple gray and white gradient. I think this background is extremely effective because it doesn't distract from the main image of Shakira. unlike Q and Cheryl Coles very dramatic costume and makeup, Rolling Stone have enhanced the models sex appeal by having her clothed simply in black and showing a lot of skin. I have to say I do prefer The mast head Q have used in comparison to Rolling Stone which is a simply white with a black outline. I think Q's blood red Masthead draws much more attention and makes the cover look extremely interesting and eyecatching.

Sin City
I first got my inspiration for the style of my magazine, when I saw Cheryl Coles photoshoot for Q. The instant I saw it I immediately thought of the film Sin City. I love the style of sin city because it is so unique and different. Its themes are sexy and sinister something that the dark images and rain add too.I have therefore decided because In order to use sin city as a theme, I need to link it to my magazine. Therefore I have decided that one of the topics on my contents page will refer to a Sin City musical.
I think it will be incredibly effective in making my front cover fantastic.

Musical Influences...

The first Band I looked at was the Veronicas as I personally love their music and I think they have just the right amount of attitude and Sex appeal in order to make a front cover eye catching. I chose to look at the veronicas because I am thinking of using a girl duet on my front cover and I think the veronicas are a great example of the kind of music and style the band I have in mind has.

I want my magazine to contain lot's of different artists, it is for this reason that I think including the Hati earthquake's release of Everybody Hurts in my contents is fantastic because it is underlining a very real cause and it in itself features many different artists such as; Bono, Cheryl Cole and many many more.

The final Musical influence i looked at was the very popular and ever so slightly cheesy musicals of the west end. I want my magazine to cover a range of interests and be unique in every way possible. Therefore I think mentioning new musicals and possibly have some pictures of such musicals would be very interesting and would appeal to a diverse audience. I dont just want my magazine to cover the latest music sensations, I want my magazine to cover all different types of music including that of the west end and broadway.
